independent adjuster

Who is this person calling about the claim if they do not even work for the insurance company? An independent adjuster is a licensed insurance claims professional hired on a contract basis to investigate, evaluate, and sometimes help settle a loss for an insurer. Unlike a staff adjuster, who is an employee of the insurance company, an independent adjuster works for an outside adjusting firm and may handle claims for several insurers at different times. The job usually includes reviewing reports, inspecting damage, interviewing witnesses, and recommending what the insurer should pay under the policy.

That matters because the independent adjuster may sound like "the insurance company" even though they are not on its payroll. For a crash claim, that can affect how quickly evidence is gathered, what documents are requested, and how the insurer values injuries, vehicle damage, or lost income. On rural Arizona roads, where a scene on SR-87 or a sun-glare crash on I-10 may not be documented perfectly at first, early statements and photos can carry a lot of weight.

For an injury claim, remember who the adjuster works for: the insurer, not the injured person. Arizona requires insurance adjusters, including independent adjusters, to be licensed under Arizona insurance law and regulated by the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions. Their evaluation can influence a settlement, a liability decision, or whether the insurer disputes damages.
